Tramadol (Ultram) Indications
INDICATIONS
In adults, Tramadol (ULTRAM) is used to relieve pain that is severe enough to need an opioid analgesic and for which other therapies are ineffective.
Use Restrictions
Because of the dangers of opioid addiction, abuse, and misuse, even at prescribed dosages [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS], ULTRAM should only be used in patients who have exhausted all other treatment alternatives [e.g., non-opioid analgesics]:
- Have not been tolerated and are unlikely to be tolerated in the future.
- Have failed to give sufficient analgesia or will fail to offer adequate analgesia.
- Start the dosage regimen for each patient separately, taking into consideration the patient’s pain intensity, responsiveness, previous analgesic treatment history, and risk factors for addiction, abuse, and misuse [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].
- Monitor patients for respiratory depression, particularly during the first 24-72 hours of starting treatment and after ULTRAM dose increases, and modify the dosage as needed [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].
